Hostage Negotiation On The Table
When San Diego police encounter a hostage situation, Detective Sgt. Wayne Spees drops what he’s doing with the gang unit to lead the team that will negotiate for the lives of those at the mercy of a desperate criminal.
A member of the team for nine years, Spees will discuss hostage negotiations at the June 24 meeting of Sisters in Crime San Diego.
Spees manages the life-and-death bargaining session by assessing the situation and developing the strategy for dealing with the hostage-taker. He will select the officer who will do the talking, decide how best to use any intelligence, and tell his supervisors whether he thinks the hostages could be killed. Such tense situations are not new to Spees. The 24-year veteran of the San Diego police department brings nine years of experience as a SWAT officer to his job.
